Security Camera and Smart Devices Setup

Most camera and smart device systems we see are not badly installed. They are badly configured. The cameras are pointed at the driveway but the recording retention is seven days, remote access is wide open, the recorder is on the same network as the laptop, and nobody has the password anymore. We design, configure and document these systems so that they are actually useful and actually private.

What We Handle

Design and Camera Placement

A site plan before anything gets mounted: what each camera can actually see, where the light will defeat it at six in the morning, how many you genuinely need, and which spots matter. Most properties are sold twice as many cameras as they need and still miss the approach to the front door.

Recorder, Storage and Retention

Local recording set up with enough storage to hold a useful window rather than a weekend, motion detection tuned so it does not alert on every passing car, and a clear answer to how you get footage off the system if you ever need to hand it to someone.

Network and Remote Access, Done Safely

This is the part that usually goes wrong. Cameras and recorders go on their own network segment, remote viewing is set up without punching holes in your firewall, and default credentials are replaced. Internet-exposed camera recorders are one of the most reliably compromised device categories there is, and the fix is configuration rather than a better camera.

Smart Devices That Still Work Next Year

Lighting, locks, thermostats, sensors and the automations that connect them, set up with a written record of what is installed and how it is configured. We will also tell you honestly which devices depend on a manufacturer’s cloud service continuing to exist, because that is the thing that breaks these systems.

Cabling

Where new low voltage cable has to be pulled through walls, that portion of the work is carried out by a licensed low voltage contractor. We do the design, the configuration and the integration, and we coordinate the cable work so you are dealing with one point of contact rather than three.

Straight Answers

Should the cameras record audio?

Be careful here. California is a two-party consent state, and the rules on recording conversations are considerably stricter than the rules on recording video. We configure audio off by default on outdoor cameras for that reason. If you want it on, that is your call to make with proper advice, not ours to switch on quietly.

Can a camera cover the street or my neighbour’s property?

We aim cameras at your property and the approaches to it, and we will mask areas that overreach where the system supports it. It avoids a neighbour dispute and it produces better footage, since a camera trying to watch everything resolves nothing.

Cloud subscription or local recording?

Local recording keeps your footage yours and keeps working when the internet is down, which is often exactly when you want it. Cloud is simpler and the apps are usually better. We will set up either, and for most sites a local recorder with selective cloud backup is the sensible middle.

Do you monitor the cameras?

No. We are not an alarm monitoring company and we do not watch your property. We build the system and hand it to you, documented.

Can you fix a system somebody else installed?

Usually, and it is a good part of what we do. Inherited systems with no documentation and no credentials are the most common call in this category. If the hardware is genuinely past it we will say so instead of billing hours against it.
